Related Posts Widget for Blogger / Blogspot

Now here is wonderful hack for displaying links to related posts beneath each of your blog posts. The related articles are chosen from other posts in that same category/label/tag. With this hack many of your readers will remain on your site for longer periods of time when they see related posts of interest.

Preview of Related Posts Links:

Error Fix:

If your related posts have not been working correctly:
  1. Search for this line of code: http://theblogtemplates.com/scripts/Related_posts_hack.js
  2. Replace the URL above with https://sites.google.com/site/widgetsforfree/scripts/Related_posts_hack.js

How to Add Related Posts Widget to Your Blog?

  1. Go to Layout >Edit HTML in your Blogger Dashboard.
  2. Back up your existing Template before making any changes!
  3. Make sure to check the "Expand Widget Templates" box.
  4. Search for the </head> tag.
  5. Add the following code just before the </head> tag.
  6. <style> #related-posts { float : left; width : 540px; margin-top:20px; margin-left : 5px; margin-bottom:20px; font : 11px Verdana; margin-bottom:10px; } #related-posts .widget { list-style-type : none; margin : 5px 0 5px 0; padding : 0; } #related-posts .widget h2, #related-posts h2 { font-size : 20px; font-weight : normal; margin : 5px 7px 0; padding : 0 0 5px; } #related-posts a { text-decoration : none; } #related-posts a:hover { text-decoration : none; } #related-posts ul { border : medium none; margin : 10px; padding : 0; } #related-posts ul li { display : block; background : url("http://lh3.ggpht.com/_cNpXRtRph18/S76dASm3WGI/AAAAAAAAEJg/AVmw4HhRdsk/rss.png") no-repeat 0 0; margin : 0; padding-top : 0; padding-right : 0; padding-bottom : 1px; padding-left : 21px; margin-bottom : 5px; line-height : 2em; border-bottom:1px dotted #cccccc; } </style> <script src='https://sites.google.com/site/widgetsforfree/scripts/Related_posts_hack.js' type='text/javascript'/>
  7. Now search for <data:post.body/>. In some of the templates this code may look like this
    <div class='post-body>
    or
    <data:post.body/>
  8. Add the following code just beneath the code you just searched for.
    <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
    <div id="related-posts">
    <font face='Arial' size='3'><b>Related Posts : </b></font><font color='#FFFFFF'><b:loop values='data:post.labels' var='label'><data:label.name/><b:if cond='data:label.isLast != &quot;true&quot;'>,</b:if><b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'>
    <script expr:src='&quot;/feeds/posts/default/-/&quot; + data:label.name + &quot;?alt=json-in-script&amp;callback=related_results_labels&amp;max-results=5&quot;' type='text/javascript'/></b:if></b:loop> </font>
    <script type='text/javascript'> removeRelatedDuplicates(); printRelatedLabels();
    </script>
    </div></b:if>
  9. Now Save your Template and you're done!

Customization

  • In order to change the number of maximum related posts being displayed for each label, search for the code below (within the code given in step 7) and change the number "5" to any desired number.
  • max-results=5

I've come up with the error:

We were unable to save your template

Please correct the error below, and submit your template again.

More than one widget was found with id: LinkList1. Widget IDs should be unique.

Can you please advise?? Thanks!

John Smith said...

Domforth, the error that you received doesn't have anything to do with this Related Posts Hack. What you need to do is go to layout and delete/remove all your link lists and when you're finished you can go back and add the links again if you prefer. When you're done with all this, you should be able to implement this hack into your blog.

Hi, John...I have been wanting a related posts widget for my blog forever...I have tried this one and other methods, but none see to work. I think it has something to do with the customized template I am using...can you help?? I would really appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Searchles just came out with a contextual Related Posts widget for blogger that actually analyzes your text to match related posts - not tag/label reliant. Has SEO benefits too and is real easy to install. You just add a gadget to your layout and embed the code you're given and it's up and running. You guys should have a look: http://searchles.com/misc/platform

Oh I would love to use this, but I'm getting the error bX-2qsmc9 - maybe the problem has to do with my custom template?

Can't get this to work for me. Any advice?

Daiquiri, it might be difficult to implement this into your blog because you have a customized blogger template. I will work on a more "universal" method to add this to your blog.

John Smith said...

Adam, I added step number 9, which explains how to alter the number of posts being displayed.

So, John, it isn't possible to have this feature with a customized template (classic)?

That doesn't seem too fair.

Kathryn: I belive it is possible. But I haven't tried it myself so I'm not 100% sure. But try it for yourself because it's a great widget and you'd be missing a lot by not installing it.

Two questions:

1) Can the font and size of "Related Posts" be modified?

2) The number of max posts doesn't seem to be working. I put in a max of 5, but many of the posts have lists ranging between 2-7. Any thoughts? I'd love to standardize this to make it 5.

John Smith said...

Larissa, the related posts font size can be changed by searching for font-size : 20px; and the size of the links can be changed by searching for font-size : 11px;

i've been looking for a tutorial like this for the longest time! plus easy walk-through!

got an issue though, is it possible not to show the labels/tags anymore before the related articles? thanks!

Love this and it's on my blog (http://aphroditeastrology.com) but I cannot seem to adjust the number of "max results." I have manipulated it several times, but it's showing ALL of the articles under the labels instead of the number I'm inputting.

Any way to adjust the number of "max results" so that it doesn't show everything in that category?

I love it! But is there a way to make the related posts appear in oldest first order? I'd like that first related posts were the oldest ones.

John first I want to say thanks for posting all of these great hacks. I am pretty new to blogger and your tutorials are very easy to follow. I just installed the above code, when I click on a post in my blog it shows the text "Related Posts :" but there are not any actual related posts that display under this text? did I do something wrong?

here is the link to my blog

Thanks a lot
